Williams notes that, if successful, these efforts “could also create a multi-billion dollar industry with the possibility of thousands of direct jobs for New Brunswick workers.”

Representatives from NB Power and the two companies they've partnered with - ARC Canada and Moltex Energy Canada Inc. - took part in a panel discussion Sunday at the Hilton Saint John for the Canadian Nuclear Workers' Council, the collective voice of organized labour in Canada's nuclear industry.

The Telegraph Journal notes that the two Canadian companies with headquarters in Saint John are looking to make New Brunswick into one of the world's leading producers of SMR's with the help of the provincial utility.

"It's the new technology, it's the new move ahead," said David Shier, president of the national council. The chair of the council, Bob Walker, took a slightly different approach, according to news coverage. He said as long as fossil fuels are still being used, he supports the development of the Alberta oil sands. However, looking at the long game, he said nuclear power is where the country should be headed.

The Telegraph-Journal reported that ARC Canada President and CEO Norman Sawyer believes production in New Brunswick holds the potential of being a "generation opportunity" because the province already has a strong nuclear background, an experienced nuclear operator in NB Power, a flexible work force and educational institutions that can support development and innovation.

Sawyer's company is on the heels of a completion of the first phase of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission Vendor Design Review for its ARC-100 technology. It's the first company to do so in New Brunswick, and just the third in Canada.
